CELTA Online Course Content

09:00 to 11:00

Start of the day – We discuss the lessons for the following day, and cover key aspects of the course to consolidate trainees understanding of the lesson framework that they researched in order to teach

11:00 to 11:30

30-minute break

11:30 to 13:00

Lesson rehearsals where those that are teaching on that day can put knowledge into practice by rehearsing key stages of their up-coming lessons. During that time, they receive feedback and guidance from the qualified Cambridge trainer along with their peers on any areas that can be tweaked and improved upon. This not only helps to better apply the variety of teaching techniques but also allows trainees to get used to the different functions on Zoom, which is the online platform used to deliver lessons. This time is also used to revise and consolidate understanding of key principles of TEFL teaching.

13:00 to 14:00

60-minute lunchbreak

14:00 to 16:30

Teaching Practice (TP) is when trainees teach their lessons that they planned for and rehearsed. Many trainees comment that TP is their favourite part of the course as they are teaching real students – motivated students with real reasons to want to learn English. The TP students understand that trainees are learning to teach and that they are on a training course so they are all super-supportive and encouraging to the teacher. When trainees are not teaching they are observing their peers in order to give them feedback on their lessons.

16:30 to 16:45

15-minute break

16:45 to 17:15

Feedback is designed to be very developmental, allowing everyone to learn from each other. The more trainees are open to different ideas and ways of doing things, the more development they see in their TPs throughout the course.

Evenings

In the evenings, you have access to all of IH Bangkok & Chiang Mai’s training resources, which include a vast range of videos and reading material on every aspect of the course from methodology and planning to activities and games.  Each week trainees are given guidance on what to research based on the lesson type you are due to teach. As you progress through the course, you research different lesson types (receptive skills, grammar etc.), different lesson frameworks (PPP, TBL etc.) and the different teaching techniques to use within the stages of the lessons.  Don’t worry, we try to make the resources as practical as possible by providing many videos on how to apply the variety of ideas, techniques and activities.

Using our well-stocked Moodle resources, you will be able to access to the necessary input for your upcoming lessons. For example, for a reading lesson you will:

  • Watch a short video on the rationale for the different stages within a reading lesson;
  • Watch a reading skills lesson in action;
  • Read about strategies to create curiosity in the text beforehand;
  • Learn about how students read differently and examine task-types that help develop the different reading skills;
  • Read about how to respond effectively to problems in a reading skills lesson.
  • Look at different examples of possible extended speaking tasks that you can design to give students fluency practice connected to the text.

Once you have researched one area of English language teaching you will receive another area of teaching to focus on with different videos and reading material to complete in order to develop and deepen your understanding of the teaching methodology.

Frequently asked questions

Will my CELTA Certificate show that the course was taken online?

No – the certificate will be the exact same as the face to face course.

What applications or programs are required for the course?

You just need a laptop or desktop computer with internet, and we have everything else. We will give you a link to the Zoom account and we will give you access to our custom made Moodle course (both can be accessed from a web browser so you do not need to download the application if you don’t want to).

What are the IT Requirements?

  • A laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and microphone
  • A recommended internet speed of 5 Mbps or a minimum of 600kbps

What is the free 2-day Intro to Young Learners Course?

Although the CELTA course trains you to teach both adults and kids, this course is designed to offer tips, tricks, and methodology for the sometimes difficult task of teaching young learners. For more information on the 2-day course, please click here.

What is the difference between the face to face and CELTA online course?

As mentioned above, the certificates are the same. The location is different as the online course can be taken from anywhere with access to the internet. However, the online CELTA course also has more “face time” with your trainer when compared with the face to face course. The content, methodology, training etc are all the same for both courses.
